LINCOLN CROCKETT: News

Portland Monthly publishes short but sweet review - November 1, 2007

Portland Monthly
November 2007
On The Town (column)
“We Liked It” Local CD Reviews
pp 226

"It takes a fair amount of charm, chops and chutzpa to hold our attention with a minimal musical palette, but mandolin wrangler Lincoln Crockett, from local bluegrass outfit Cross-eyed Rosie, manages to do so on his album Angels & Devils Alike (www.lincolncrockett.com). Armed with just a mandolin, an acoustic guitar and a supple voice, Crockett conducts us on a folksy tour of his mood swings, from glum (“Nothing Makes Me Feel Good”) to glad (“Feels So Good”), and for the most part it’s a bump-free and tuneful trip."

Lincoln on KINK 101.9FM! ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE on iTunes! - October 26, 2007

Northwest Newsletter

Hi Everyone,

Lincoln is going to receive his first mass-market, commercial radio
broadcast! KINK FM101.9 in Portland has chosen 'When Will You Come
Home' to play on their Local Music Spotlight, scheduled to air Friday
11/2 between 9:15 & 9:30pm PST. You can listen online at www.kink.fm
ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE has made it on to the world's largest digital
music store: Apple iTunes! THE LINK IS:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playListId=266454919
We were as shocked as anyone to find it listed as 'Country', but we
realize that it's a short step from "has a mandolin" to "Progressive
Bluegrass" to "Country". Its still the same great music.

For those who prefer the experience of a physical CD, you can order
one through CD Baby. THE "BUY THE CD" link on CD Baby is:

--------------------------In other news---------------------------

Lincoln has also uploaded two tracks from the new album, 'When Will
You Come Home' and 'Maybe Souls', to popular internet radio station
Radio Paradise, www.radioparadise.com. To be heard, new songs are
reviewed and approved by listeners themselves! So drop by, become a
member (if you aren't one already), and look for Lincoln's tracks on
the LRC tab. For music fans who aren't satisfied by constricted
commercial radio formats, Radio Paradise is, well, paradise.

We're also happy to report that ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE will be
reviewed in Portland Monthly Magazine, the most-read magazine in
Portland. We'll have its juiciest bits online as soon!

27 Chords and the Truth last Friday - October 15, 2007

Friday's show at Mississippi Pizza had a great turnout and together we really generated some energy. I enjoyed seeing some new friends and fans made. That at least judging from their wide eyes and how they kept bopping in their seats. That's always fun. Secretly, I keep the beat by watching all of your feet tap. This was the first time I'd seen opener Adam Hill's complete set, even after having him sit in with me at the cd release last month. It was like watching someone get inside my head, adding modern twists to traditional music, all with a laid-back feel. Keep up with Adam at www.myspace.com/mradamhill. Thanks to all of you who came and showed your support for Adam and I. See you next time!

GREAT PRESS IN THE OREGONIAN - September 24, 2007

"New-grass bluegrass"
Friday, September 21, 2007
DON CAMPBELL
Special to The Oregonian

There's nothing wrong with old-school, but the real fun comes with those who push envelopes. As with blues, jazz, even country and rock 'n' roll, those who bring something new to the party help propel genres to higher levels.

Such is the case with Lincoln Crockett, a young lion on the Portland bluegrass scene. A regular in Cross-Eyed Rosie, the Josh Cole Band and Caravan Gogh, Crockett has released a new solo project that radiates all that's good about the progressive side of bluegrass. A sterling mandolin picker, guitarist and compelling singer, he has produced a 12-song piece of work that might have traditionalists scratching their heads, but new-grassers will gravitate to it like moths to a porch light.

It will be hard to avoid comparisons to Nickel Creek's Chris Thile, but that might be more happenstance than anything stylistically plagiaristic. Crockett owns the requisite high-and-lonesome voice -- plaintive, achingly bittersweet and clear as creekwater, without a hint of vibrato -- and he's not afraid to use it. Like Thile, he's fearless and playful, but can clearly stand on his own.

He is also a fiery player who slashes his custom twin-point mandolin when called for, but who displays a feather-light touch on the tender tunes. Crockett has a predilection for more complex chording, and he lets that predilection shine throughout this largely original effort.

Though his playing can be a shade on the outside (in a good way), he doesn't stray far enough from his bluegrass roots to do damage to the form. This is bluegrass, but squeezed through the soul of a youngster. You'll hear all his influences -- folk, rock, pop, funk -- but he's found a way to gather them up under the bluegrass mantle and produce something as pleasant as a long summer day.

Fantastic cd release show! - September 24, 2007

Hi everyone!

Thank you for your support!

Friday's CD release show for ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE sold out 3 hours before the doors even opened! The show started off hot with an opening set by Nathaniel Talbot that had the audience calling for an encore. I had a great time with my set, starting off with help from Adam Hill on guitar, bringing in some of the backing tracks from the album, and bringing Adam back out on bass to finish out the show. I also had a chance to show off new material and as a special treat I used my Angels & Devils Alike Message Deck to divine an answer to the question "is the universe expanding". The answer? "The universe will do whatever you want it to, so go for it."

The Willamette Week featured the show as one of its rare 'picks' for music that night and the Oregonian gave the album great press --> but then listed the show for the wrong date! I guess we didn't need the help with that, but the review is still stellar, thanks Don Campbell.

The entire show was recorded live and all or part of it may be released in the future. Many thanks to all the great folks at Mississippi Studios for helping make it a great night.

We'll let you know as soon as the cd is up on cdbaby and iTunes. Thanks to everyone who came for making it a successful evening!

NORTHWEST NEWSLETTER - Lincoln Crockett's new CD arrives Sept 21! - September 6, 2007

Northwest Newsletter 9/07

Hi everyone!

Lincoln is preparing for the release of his debut full-length cd
ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE on September 21st, 2007 by taking a break from
his Imbibe happy hours and rehearsing with multi-instrumentalist Adam
Hill. You can listen to a track from the album plus a live cut right
now at www.myspace.com/lincolncrockett. Return often and we'll be
adding more songs as the release approaches.

-------------------from the press-release----------------------

MISSISSIPPI STUDIOS, PORTLAND, OR -- On September 21
mandolinist/guitarist/musical alchemist Lincoln Crockett will step
forward from his many group projects, releasing "Angels & Devils
Alike," his first full-length album. Lincoln has spent years playing
the Northwest and the West Coast as a supporting cast member for
Cross-eyed Rosie, The Josh Cole Band and Caravan Gogh. "Angels &
Devils Alike" reveals the depth, power and stunning musicality of
Lincoln's own work.

Lincoln grew up on rock 'n roll, ventured down the acoustic music
path, became a voracious listener and turned up as a bluegrasser with
a taste for jazz and a spiritual flavor specific to no genre. "Angels
& Devils Alike" is sparse and spare in its arrangements, allowing for
Lincoln's inspiring lyrics, delicate vocal harmonies and
guitar/mandolin interplay to shine. The flavor of the music is not
bluegrass or newgrass, nor is it pop or folk. Lincoln artfully
blends texture and genre into soothing, healing acoustic music.

The September 21 show will feature "Angels & Devils Alike" in its
purest state, with Lincoln playing with multi-instrumentalist Adam
Hill and an engineer blending in actual tracks and environmental
sound from the album. Local songwriter Nathaniel Talbot, who blends
schooled Travis picking and an indie-pop sense of melody will open
the show at 10 p.m.

Mississippi Studios is located at 3939 N Mississippi Ave. For venue
information call (503)288-3895 or visit www.mississippistudios.com.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The cd will be first available to the public at the show, afterwhich
you'll be able to find it on cdbaby and iTunes.

While preparing for the show Lincoln will continue gigging with
Cross-eyed Rosie and is excited for several new Robb&Crockett gigs.
If you've never seen them, Robb&Crockett is Jimmy Robb & Lincoln
Crockett on acoustic guitar and mandolin and features their powerful
harmonies. "Like the Everyly Brothers hit random on a truck stop
jukebox" and tons of fun. www.myspace.com/robbcrockett

ANGELS AND DEVILS ALIKE RELEASE SHOW AT MISSISSIPPI STUDIOS!! - July 27, 2007

Lincoln's new twelve-song cd, Angel's and Devils Alike, is coming out September 21st with a release show at Mississippi Studios in Portland!! Find out more on the Calendar Page!!

Great fun opening for Page McConnell - July 12, 2007

The opening set for Page McConnell this evening was a blast. AND hilarious. with all the keyboard gear that crew was hauling I squeezed myself and my little ol' mandolin up at the front edge of the stage and rocked it from there. The audience was super responsive and I got a lot of stoked feedback the rest of the evening. Page checked out some of the set and had good things to say. Sounds like he and his touring band are nearing the end of their trip and they really sounded great. The place was packed!!

Many thanks to the Aladdin staff who are really running a first rate operation over there. Music buisness doesn't have to be beautiful but these guys actually enjoy their work. Special thanks to Evan, Tommy, Paul and Freddie-the-new-guy for taking good care of me. Top thanks to Mark Adler for calling me in for the gig!

And thanks to all of you who came out to show your support, or wrote or called with kudos before the show. You were there in spirit. See you again next time!

Lincoln opens a new Page Wednesday... - July 9, 2007

keyboardist and founding member of the iconic and genre-busting
improvisational band Phish, is touring in support of his self-titled
debut solo release. Lincoln is fresh from the studio and both will

Festival and at Matt Miner's sold out houseconcert in June! We also
had a great time at FolkLife with Cross-eyed Rosie, and even ended up
turning Brad Creel's slot at the Rock Creek Tavern into a solo show
when Brad's beloved dog took ill. The new cd is also nearing
mastering. Lincoln has been busy!

Lincoln is also pleased to announce that he's accepted an offer to
become the mandolin player for Caravan Gogh. CVG just released their
debut disk at Mississippi Studios in June. Their experimental swing
sound is equal parts Django Reinhardt and Frank Zappa, channeled thru
ukelele, cello, mandolin and electric bass. CVG must be heard to be
believed and gives Lincoln an opportunity to experiment with the jazz
side of the mandolin.

Keep up with all these chances to hear Lincoln's solo shows, as well
as his unique singing and mandolin playing for great Northwest bands

Album enters final mix! - June 20, 2007

Today Lincoln and engineer Tom Frisch sat down with Portland music cornerstones Jim Brunberg and Ezra Holbrook to finish the final mix for Lincoln's new album, tentatively titled "Angels & Devils Alike". Both Jim & Ezra were thrilled with what they heard and each offered a couple of comments to take the album from fantastic to, well, what's better than fantastic? Jim was so excited he invited Lincoln to add vocals to his next album and even asked to be in Lincoln's band!

Many thanks to E & J for their time and support. Massive thanks also to the select friends and fans who have previewed the disk and come back smiling.

We'll let you know as soon as the release show is booked!!

Lincoln joins Caravan Gogh! - June 11, 2007

Lincoln has accepted an invitation to join Portland band, Caravan Gogh, taking over for their mandolin player in mid July. CVG is releasing their first album, "Caravan Gogh", this month at the prestigious Mississippi Studios.

Says Jeff Rosenberg of The Willamette Weekly "Their cello-mando-uke-bass lineup defies convention, as do the four freewheeling musical minds wielding those instruments."

Keep an eye on the calendar to check out Lincoln and this wild new adventure live!

SNAP your fingers for fun - March 12, 2007

The Salmon Nation Artist's Project (SNAP) went off great last night at Alberta St Pub here in Portland. Many Thanks to Alexa Wiley for her hard work getting the show together and spearheading the project. Her set was hot as usual, and she had me up to play. Any time, Alexa!

Thanks to everyone who showed up to support the evening. It was good to see some of N/NE Portland crew out, and great to find new supporters as well. A special shout-out goes to Hunter Paye, who's set earlier in the evening wow-ed me with his gentle songwriting and inviting presence. Check him out!

Looking forward to seeing you out there soon,

Lincoln

Recording is underway! - January 24, 2007

Lincoln is laying down tracks with his old friend, Tom Frisch, at the latter's home studio. The first finished was a fantastic version of 'Sawdust Settler', slated to appear on a compilation disk to benefit the Salmon Nation Project, due later this year.

November is an open door... - November 28, 2006

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! May you have much to be thankful for.

November was a very fun and busy month:

We saw Lincoln's final solo gig at the Trout Lake Country Inn. "Trout Lake's Living Room" is closing it's doors after their sure-to-be-crazy New Year's Eve bash, so this was Lincoln's last solo turn on the stage. The Inn has been Lincoln's second home for the past year and a half, and he's sad to see the place go. Trout Lake has proved itself to be very supportive of good live music, always giving Lincoln a warm welcome and coming out strong for Cross-eyed Rosie shows. May the fun continue some other way!

Lincoln's Edgefield Exorcism played to an enthusiastic audience in the winery. The few fans who cozied into the loung chairs in the very front were treated to some close-contact pyrotechnics. New fans were made further back as well and a lot of wine disappeared. Was that why people were bobbing their heads so much?

Light In The Dark, with Joni Laurence and Juliet Wyers, was a special evening on the 15th. A lot of new and old friends came out. A handful even made it all the way to closing time! First Juliet, then Joni, and finally Lincoln each took the stage to themselves for a 30 minute set. Each makes such beautiful and unique music. All three of them played together in the round for the rest of the evening, trading songs, stories, wisecracks, and offering spontaneous accompaniment. Oh, the joy of lonely solo performers making music together, and the rare magic of equals supporting one another! Thanks to everybody for coming.

Lincoln is booked to continue his imbibe happy hours through December, and is engaged in a dog-pile of behind the scenes activity. Look for exciting new things in 2007!

Edgefield Exorcised... - October 15, 2006

Lincoln's second Edgefield Exorcism went off with a bang with a great crowd crammed into the long hall in the winery. As with all of Lincoln's past shows at the Edgefield, the music ran well past 9 for all the folks who hung on long. MVPs of the night were busy MOD Sam and indefatigable bartender/wine-taster Janelle, who poured generously late into the evening.

You have to see a show in Edgefield's winery to believe it. The long, glass-lined hall is surrounded by kegs of beer and wine, lined with small candle-lit tables and chairs, and capped off with a cozy couch and loungers. People who stayed to the end commented it was just like being invited into Lincoln's living room.

Many thanks to all who came out and made this casual show a success! Look forward to a new Edgefield Exorcism every second Satruday of the Month in '06.

Happy Hour's continue! - July 28, 2006

Lincoln and imbibe are continuing their Wednesday happy hours in August! Tentatively titled "Lincoln Crockett's Humpday HappyHours", the goal is to continue to bring good people together to hear Lincoln's music. Cuz let's face it, good people like what he does. He works hard to bring out the best in himself and people are responding:

"Your songs are moving"...

"You've got some truly beautiful progressions..."

"Your songwriting and mandolin playing are amazing"...

...are just some of the things people said there in July.

Stay tuned for how these happy hours may get even more interesting!...

Tons of fun at the Red Shed - July 27, 2006

Hey everyone,

The Red Shed was a blast last night, thanks to everyone who came, stayed and enjoyed themselves and the music. What a beautiful place to have been playing these past couple of months!

If you've never seen it, McMenamin's Edgefield's Little Red Shed has a great outdoor concert series. The LRS is exactly that, a rustic shed, buried in vines, serving beer and wine, surrounded by picnic tables and lawn.

Again the audience was warm and I got to meet people who're tracking down my shows cuz they love the music. Hope you'll all do the same! The circle is widening and I couldn't be happier.

As a reminder, at this time you can download and share the tracks you find here on the MUSIC page. Please spread them freely and send people my way. The more the merrier!

Hope you're enjoying your summers.
